Astor Air Traffic Control
Tuesday 9th November 2004
Throughout the saga Raytheon representatives and politicians and others wanting to sell raytheon's presence to the Derry stroke Londonderry public would say that what they were building was an air traffic control system.
Sounds innocent doesn't it? And indeed, they could say, without lying, that it was an air traffic control system but of course they were lying, not directly but by omission. it was an air traffic control system but not for nice things like passenger planes, oh no, it was an air traffic control system for bombs and missilies.
This was the time of the bombing of Serbia and our politicians could see that in order to get the public on their side they had to demonstrate a concern for civilian life, i.e. they needed "high precision" weapons that could take out the bad guys without hurting the little people. Of course, they would not bother to mention that in the case of poor intelligence the weapons would with great accuracy hit civilian targets.
This UK govenment funded weapons project went under the name ASTOR and they got our peacenik politicians to sell it to our city council.
