Two P or Not to Pee

Monday 25th October 2004

Eamonn bought a costume top-hat and wore it as we walked around the town.

I was in sculptural art mode and created three chalk-framed pieces from pavement litter in Shipquay Street. The first consited of two groups in opposite corners. In one corner wer a powder compact, a make-up brush, and a cigarette lighter. In the opposite corner I arranced a Budweiser beer bottle, a plastic glass containing a black straw, and a cigarette butt. This we named ROUND ONE

Further up the street there was a rich supply of small bits and pieces. What had attracted my attention to the spot was a circular, shiny metal lid. That I placed in the middle of a paving stone. Around it like spokes on a bicycle wheel I laid an assortment of items including straws, pieces of white bread crust, broken shards of blue plastic, string and cigarette butts. A thick gob of translucent spittle adorned the top right-hand corner. Around this I chalked a crescent moon. We labeled this: NIGHT AND DAY.

The final one was inspired by a slow stream of water spreading down the pavement adjacent to a two-pence piece. I wrote 2 P and OR NOT TO PEE at the appropriate places.

We walked to the steps oat the entrance of St. Mary's Hall and stood under the shelter of the large porch facing Badger's Bar and the queue for Foyle taxis. I put on the white coat which we had brought for the pram driving instructor and didn't use today. On the ground we wrote, BLACK AND WITE MINSTRELS (Eamonn was still wearing his black top-hat) and proceeded to improvise some suitable songs like Swanee Rviver, and Camptown Races. By the time we had finished with them they were quite unrecognisable, though discordantly harmonious. The staff of Badger's came out to show their usual interest and appreciation. The taxi rank had no choice.
