Do not disturb
Wednesday 8th December 2004
Today Christine , Eamonn and I sat on a bench in the Richmond Centre.
We each sported a sign saying, PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB. We randomly choroused
phrases stating those phenomena which we did not want to disturb us. eg.
Please do not disturb me with Christmas,
Do not disturb with noise.
Don't disturb me with spitting
Don't disturb me with the fashion industry,
With young one's obsession with labels.
Please don't disturb me with long-legged mini-skirted girls,
Don't disturb me by staring,
Don't disturb me with worries,
etc.
Then we closed our eyes and dozed. I was fascinated to hear snippets of people's conversations and the sounds of young people trying to wake us up with squeaks , whistles and claps.
I imagine that our appearance was conspicuously incongrous - symbolising the exhausted shopper as the person who just wanted to opt out of the whole business of Christmas.
