The Sales or Greed selling Shite

Monday 25th October 2004

Today Eamonn and I did some "Follow The Leader," and statues, through the shopping centres without masks or costumes to confirm that it is the masks (which Lihi and I wore on Thursday) which give security personnel either the excuse or justification for putting you off their premises for simple acts like standing immobile or imitating each other, rather than the acts themselves.

The most interesting experience for me was reading aloud. In the Foyleside Shopping Centre, one of the huge windows of a shoe shop was covered over on the inside with a wall of paper advertisng a sale. The paper was in wide strips, like wall-paper. A large centrel logo proclaimed "1/2 PRICE".

The rest of the space was taken up with the word SALE written hundreds of times. in regular lines.

We stood at a suitable reading distance and read every word. Of course , most of the time we were reading "SALE", but variations developed. These were primarily at the begining and end of one of the rolls; as in any wall-papered wall where the pattern connects between rolls; only part of the word would be present. These part words led us to read the main text with more precision .

Buy half price shite why not?
If not bought'll rot.
Spend now spend now all you've got,
And what you've not,
That's how your caught.
The shops don't care, the lender's either,
They'll grab and grab at your last fiver.
They'll see you in hell, they'll laugh at your debt;
Your stress and despair is just part of the net
That catches and tangles your life and family;
Say no no no and preserve your sanity.
Say no to bargains, fashions, offers,
And no to habits,
Preserve your coffers.
