Not yet midsummer Xmas tree
Sunday May 8th 2005
In a builder's rubbish skip on Strand Rroad Eamonn and I found an artificial Xmas Tree, complete with lights and decorations. The most prominent decoration was a string of silver bells.
Wandering as we wondered where to place the tree for maximum effect we arrived at the lower end of Great James Street. A line of concrete posts bordered a fence of high metal railings, surrounding a large area of waste ground, formerly used as a car-park. The end post had been broken off at the base. This seemed a suitable place for our tree. We stood it on the broken base and attached it to the railings with the flex from the Xmas tree lights.
On each of the six posts we chalked the word POST, and in front of the tree we wrote EARLY FOR XMAS.
Not yet midsummer,
Our Xmas tree up
Shug ma kilaylee
So pockatee hup.
The lights are unlit,
The bells are a glitter,
Silver and shining,
Rupert la titter.
Coo facket the fence,
Tall high and strong,
Keeping us out,
No chance of a song
From inside the space
Where we wanted to be
To play and be merry
With our new tree.
So outside we stood,
And blamed the developers
The people with power
Nasty envelopers.
Of those who have power
God would be worst
Except I'm an athiest
So I can't make Him cursed.
I'd curse God for His pains,
For the illness he makes,
Starvation and war,
The cruelty baked.
But God doesn't exist,
My curses he's fleed,
I'll just curse at those who say,
Its all meant to be.
